DNS, or Domain Name System, is a fundamental component of the internet that acts as a directory for translating human-readable domain names into numerical IP addresses. In essence, it serves as the internet's phone book, allowing users to access websites, send emails, and perform other online activities by typing in familiar domain names rather than complex numerical IP addresses.
Here's how DNS works:
User Input: When you enter a domain name (e.g., www.example.com) into your web browser or any other internet application, your device needs to find the corresponding IP address to establish a connection with the desired website.
DNS Query: Your device sends a DNS query to a DNS resolver (typically provided by your internet service provider or a third-party service). The query contains the domain name you entered.
DNS Resolution Process: The resolver starts the resolution process by first checking its local cache to see if it has recently resolved the same domain name. If the information is found in the cache and is still valid, the resolver can immediately provide the corresponding IP address.
Recursive Query: If the resolver doesn't have the information in its cache or if the cached information has expired, it initiates a recursive query. In a recursive query, the resolver starts querying root name servers, which are authoritative for the top-level domains (like .com, .org, .net).
Iterative Query: Upon receiving the query, the root name server responds with the IP address of the authoritative name server for the top-level domain in the queried domain name (e.g., .com). The resolver then queries the authoritative name server for the IP address of the next-level domain server (e.g., example.com).
Authoritative Response: The authoritative name server for the domain (e.g., example.com) responds with the IP address associated with the requested domain name.
Cache Update: The resolver caches the obtained IP address for future reference, reducing the need for repetitive queries and improving efficiency.
Connection Establishment: With the IP address obtained from the DNS resolution process, your device can now establish a connection with the desired website's server and retrieve the requested content.
DNS operates as a distributed system, with millions of servers worldwide, ensuring redundancy and reliability. It plays a critical role in the functioning of the internet by enabling users to access resources using human-readable domain names instead of cumbersome IP addresses.
